Sustainability
Our responsibility
Our approach to estate management
Gilford Castle Estate has been shaped by centuries of human activity. This land has long been settled, worked, cleared, planted, and grazed. In the 19th century, the Dickson family’s success in the linen industry transformed both the village of Gilford and the estate, bringing with it the parkland, ornamental gardens, and the house itself. Later generations restored and expanded the house and its gardens in line with the sensibilities of their time.
Today, we continue that tradition of stewardship, with a renewed focus on regeneration and responsibility. We aim to maintain this landscape in a way that honours its historic character, supports biodiversity, and reduces environmental impact.

Modernisation
Stewardship of a historic estate
The castle’s restoration has paired traditional craftsmanship with modern, efficient technology. Air-source heat pumps, solar energy, and low-energy lighting reduce the environmental impact of a 19th-century building, helping preserve its architecture while ensuring year-round comfort. All cooking facilities are powered by renewable electricity, enabling the estate to maintain high hospitality standards while leaving a lighter footprint.
Energy
Resource efficiency
We are committed to reducing our environmental impact through:
- Air-source heat pumps and solar energy for heating and hot water
- Wood-burning systems used responsibly and efficiently
- LED bulbs throughout much of the castle
- All-electric ovens and hobs powered by renewable energy
These measures allow the estate to operate with modern efficiency while protecting the castle’s historic fabric.
Sourcing
Estate produce & local provenance
The estate provides fresh ingredients for the castle’s kitchens. Honey from our own hives, herbs grown onsite, and eggs collected each morning all contribute to a dining experience rooted in provenance and seasonality. We are committed to supporting local producers across Northern Ireland, working with caterers and suppliers who prioritise high-quality, locally sourced ingredients.
Wildlife
Ecological care
Across the grounds, owl boxes, bat roosts, birdhouses, hedgehog shelters, ladybird houses, and a duck house create safe places for native species to thrive. Along the main avenue, thousands of flowering bulbs and stretches of wildflower planting attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators throughout the spring and summer. These efforts help sustain the estate’s natural rhythms and enhance its value as a sanctuary for both wildlife and guests.
Conservation
Gardens, grounds & landscape management
We maintain our woodlands, meadows and riverbank areas with light intervention to protect biodiversity. Native planting is favoured wherever possible to support soil health and local ecosystems. Sustainable landscaping techniques—such as water-conscious gardening and habitat conservation—ensure the estate remains vibrant and resilient.
Heritage
Supporting local craft
Where possible, our restorations and furnishings rely on local expertise and materials, from Ulster-woven wool carpets to hand-finished textiles and traditional joinery. This dedication to local provenance not only sustains regional craftsmanship but also ensures that every detail aligns with the house’s heritage.
